Before running a comedy club, Martin Besserman was selling umbrellas and net curtains in a market. He started The Monkey Business Comedy Club in 2004 after breaking up with a girlfriend. It was very challenging in the early days having sometimes to borrow money to pay acts when just a few people might turn up..

Also he  had dealings with several bad managers or owners of bars who didn't understand what could be achieved given time.

These days Monkey Business is one of the most respected and well loved comedy clubs in the UK, famous for attracting  famous comedians from all over the world.

 

Martin Besserman has worked with Harry Hill, Russell Brand, Sean Lock, Jimmy Carr, Alan Carr, Russell Howard, Dara O Brian, Howard Marks, Omid Djaili, Noel Fielding, Rich Hall, Adam Hills,Michael McIntyre ,Rhod Gilbert, Stewart  Lee, Stephen Merchant, Lee Mack,Tim Vine, Reginald D Hunter, Ed Byrne Stephen K Amos, Lee Nelson,Jack Whitehall, Simon Amstell, Dave Gorman, Chris Addison, Russell Kane, Patrick Monahan ,Barry and Stewart,Pete Firman,Stephen Grant,Richard Herring, Paul Merton, Julian Clary,Rory Bremner and many other top names.

 

In the mid eighties Martin Besserman - either as a solo poet or with his band - supported the biggest names in the music business that included The Pretenders, Depech Mode, Adam and The Ants, Simple Minds, Madness, Dexy.s Midnight Runners, Kajagoogoo, and even Pete Townsend from The Who. Martin performed at venues like the Electric Ball Room Camden, Dingwalls, Music Machine (now Koko`s), Roundhouse,Rainbow Theatre, Hammersmith Apollo, Manchester Apollo, etc. not to mention the main stage at Glastonbury.

 

Martin released just one 4 track EP called High Class Dinner Party which stormed the  charts in Sweden, but fared less well in the UK.

Martin`s songs were featured in the film LIVE A LIFE where he acted alongside comedian Alexi Sayle.

Thoughout all this time and today Martin Besserman is a highly popular public speaker in Hyde Park. Tony Allen in his book describes Martin as the most entertaining speaker in years.

Chat show king Jerry Springer always listens to Martin Besserman's speeches when in London ,and is a huge fan.

1 Martin has been vegetarian for the last 20 years,and deplores any animal cruelty or exploitation of animals   

 2 Aged sixteen Martin joined a Theatre group called The Exploding Galaxy .An Italian film crew paid everyone £25 each if they agreed to be in their film.Martin later found out that it was a  b movie about two male lovers.

3 Martin has had a number of attractive girlfriends.He nearly got married ,but it hasent  happened yet.

4 When Martin first worked in the market aged twenty one ,the inspectors closed his stall down for selling what they described as sex aids.(massage pointed plastic things is all they really were.

6 Martin dislikes agressive type people ,and is opposed to parents ever smacking their kids .
