Hi Martin,
Thanks for your efforts in arranging what was a brilliant night. The venue was a little eccentric but produced a very intimate atmosphere which I really think enhanced the evening. We all had a great time.. thanks very much for arranging the cakes as well .. very much apprieciated! We'll certainly make every effort to attend future events.
Many Thanks  Ashley Jones Monday 6 September 2010

Hi Martin

enjoyed the evening although having arrived early it was a bit bum numbing to sit for nearly 4 hours. We should have taken advantage of the breaks.

Next time we will try and sit on the sofa or is it always reserved for lesbians?
I hope your leg has recovered from your flying entrance.
May I request 3 tickets for Lenny Henry on Monday 27th Sep please.

Hi Martin,

We had a great evening on Saturday; Zoe and I thought the venue was a good size for a comedy night and the food was really good actually.

We thought that you were particularly good as a host (both in welcoming guests) and as the MC for the evening.

Clearly there was a vast difference in the experience each act had but overall a great night. In particular we enjoyed the second female act, and the last three male acts.

We would definitely visit again – possibly to see Lenny Henry.

Good luck with the future comedy nights and we look forward another giggle at the club soon.

Thank you Martin, we had a fantastic evening on Saturday and very much enjoyed your chosen line up. It was really good to be back and we especially enjoyed Zoe Lyons and Josh Howe! Love your club and the fact that the comedians sometimes hang out in the bar afterwards - all testament that the comments they also make to you on stage that you have a great club with good atmosphere and nice audiences are true!
Hope to continue to receive your emails - bit gutted we missed out on the secret Omid Djalili gig as that would have been great. Enjoyed one at Carmel club with you that time when Stephen Merchant turned up though so as you say, it is all the luck of the draw.

Hi Martin,

I thought last night was a success and a great way to spend a Monday evening.  It was a bit of a shame that Mr Burns didn’t show up but I still think it was well on the money.  All the acts were entertaining and all the people with me enjoyed themselves also (although apparently you did chide a friend for talking even though it was a couple sat nearby… apparently).  Anyhow, thanks again,

Hi Martin,

Thanks for the email, very enjoyable evening on the whole, and I do like the general relaxed informal nature of the evening. Had seen Ian Cognito a few years back, and thought he was excellent, and he certainly didnt disappoint this time either.
From a personal point of view, enjoyed all the acts apart from he performance of Jaik Campbell. Given his list of plaudits and reviews that you've put up on him, he came across as a new act trying out some flaky material at an open mic night. Assume we just caught him on an off-night.
But anyway, yes very good night and a very good format and approach for a comedy club.Cheers

Hi Martin
What a sentimental and sensational review of the year, well done. And I am sad to realise I have missed so many good gigs, Reg Hunter, Marcus Brigstocke, Shazia Mirza, and many others. I have been working between London and Manchester for the past year to try to get a documentary idea off the ground, unfortunately it's not happening yet. The coming year will be more London based so hopefully can catch more of your shows.

Hi Martin,

Just a quick line to let you know what I thought of Saturday’s show.             What a gem Hannah George turned out to be….really engaging and very funny. Enjoyed Daniel Simonson and Old Spanish Man too. Daniel could do with a bit more material though. His dry delivery really suits him though.

Unfortunately I found Marcus Brigstocke to be surprisingly unfunny for most of his overlong set. I know you said he had new material but I can’t help thinking that maybe his old material might have been funnier.

I felt as though I was just sitting through somebody’s rant rather than enjoying a comic of some repute. Maybe we just caught him on an off night but based on this performance I wouldn’t put myself out to see him again.  Thank god for Hannah George to save the day.

Hello Martin

Having searched hi and lo for he who is known as Reginald D Hunter, it was a pleasure to be there last night! I think I enjoyed it even more to be able to see 'a work in progress' :-) The club itself was very friendly and the addition of great food was a real bonus! Gotta say tho, you might want to give the stage a little 'attention' - I don't think the pallets and carpet are working as well as the perfomers would like! ;-)
Anyway, gutted we won't be around next week to take advantage of the special offer (cos we already have a couple of friends who want to come with us), but I have no doubts we will be back soon. Thanks again  Mike O Sulivan  sent Saturday 11 July 2009

Hi Martin I had a brilliant time last night & it totally made my day that Reg D Hunter said I was a "worthy adversary". I'm sorry if I said too much & was too gobby but I was manic & still in shock after having the car crash at lunchtime. 2 crashes in a week is a bit much to handle & I'm chatty anyway but its just made me even more hyper! I was really looking forward to Marcus Brigstocke tonight but unfortunately I can't make it as I've got to go up to Newcastle to see my dad before he goes on holiday tomorrow. He's really worried about my two accidents & wants to be reassured I'm ok so I'm just on way to KingX now. Hope you have a great weekend & thanks again for a brilliant night last night. The only downside was that Rhod should not have apologised at the end.  It was a brilliant gig and I think he was just a bit put off by the 4 pretty young girls in the front row who didnt seem to get it (maybe it was a bit intellectual for them!).  I loved it and I think everyone else did. From a very amused 40 something in the second row.
Please pass on my compliments - I'm sure the recording went really well.  Janet Morrison sent Friday 19 June 2009

You mentioned there were still tickets for the Rhod Gilbert gig on the 30th July...

Martin,
Enjoyed the show and thought the atmosphere was good (no baying blokey groups).  Hoped that Reginald D Hunter would have done a longer set as he was the comic I'd especially wanted to see but Simon Brodkin's set made up for it.

Hi Martin,
I thought I'd just share some of my thoughts.  It was my first time at the venue last Thursday and I really enjoyed myself.  Although the venue is somewhat 'cosy' it had a very positive vibe.
I think that considering how busy it became, the barman could have some assistance as his temperament declined significantly and this is not really conducive to an evening where people are coming to have a laugh!  Having said that, the cocktails were delish!
The list of acts was very long and whilst I wanted to stay to see them all I couldn't because of the distance to travel home.  Would it be possible to start earlier?
Finally, congratulations to all the acts we saw, even to those who are still 'a work in progress', it's wonderful to know that there is real talent out there.Best wishes Gill Hunte sent Tuesday 28 April 2009

YOUR COMMENTS ON THE RUSSELL HOWARD /STEPHEN MERCHANT GIG ON FRIDAY 6 MARCH 2009

Martin

Friday night was absolutely brilliant!  I brought 5 mates, and we all agreed it was the best night of standup we'd seen.  They loved the venue and were amazed at the standard of the early acts - obviously they had fairly high expectations of Russell Howard and Stephen Merchant, but thought Freaky & Mannish(sp?) and Adam Bloom were amazing.
Looking forward to more similar evenings

Hi Martin

Just a very quick note to thank you very much indeed for a superb evening on Friday. We thought the Red Bar was a great venue and not only enjoyed the splendid line up but our special seats you found us in the alcove which afforded us great views! In fact I would prefer to sit there any time!! I can imagine you were very chuffed with the audience reaction and the programme you put together at very short notice. Steven Merchant was indeed a coup.
Thought you may also like to know that I recommended your club and it was discussed on Radio London early on Saturday morning!  This was in the context of the breakfast show presenters, Simon Lederman and JoAnne Good asking for a good musical guest as Elaine Paige had dropped out. We had said during the evening to one another how much Jo (a feisty lady who used to be in Crossroads years ago) would enjoy Frisky and Mannish as she likes the Puppini Sisters and burlesque.  Therefore I texted in to recommend F&M, saying of course that we had seen them at your excellent club the night before. Jo was indeed very  interested and asked Simon what Monkey Business is when he told he had been along to Monkey Business and agreed how good it was as a club. He named the Richard Steeles as a venue so you may have him on your email list.

I hope you approve and that it earns me a few brownie points - but there again one good turn does deserve another and you did us proud last Friday and cheered us up no end after a rotten week at work.  We will see you again soon.

Dear Martin,
Once again, thank you so much for possibly the most fabby night ever! I felt I had to email, everything was just brilliant, my chums absolutely adored it too.
However, I feel awful, awful, awful about the the money situation with my group; I warned them, but they're used to trundling about using cards instead of cash, so I don't think it sank in... It was awfully good of you to let them in and I am (literally, some might say..!) in your debt.
It's bizarre how it sort of escalated to comedy-heaven with the addition of acts, but it was the best kind of bizarre-ity. Thank you so, so much and you truly are a magic-man.
The best wishes money can buy,

Hi Martin
i just thought I'd drop you a quick note to say thanks for your efforts for last
weeks Saturday night Monkey Business night. (The Reginald D Hunter Night) It was
my first time at one of your nights, and being an ex promoter myself, i
understand the effort that goes into each night, and it was a really great show.
I was one of the group of 5 that were that last people to get in, and you really
made an effort to accommodate us, and it was really appreciated by all of us.
So, anyway, i just thought I'd express my thanks, and say that it's a really
great thing you're doing. Out of all of the music/comedy nights that I've been
to in london, your place seemed to have a real soul to it, more than any other
place I've been to, and in the world that we live in, you should be applauded
for putting the efforts in that you have to promote a club that's sole purpose
is to make people laugh.
I'll definitely be visiting your club night in the near future.

Thanks so much for a great night at Monkey Business on the 24th October.
The two acts that were on before Stewart Lee (Pete Jonas and Vikki Stone) were fantastic. I think the blend of the two comedians was perfect and we will definately seek these two out again.

Hi Martin,

Just came home from Monkey Business. I've been many times, but thought I'd email this time to say what a fantastic job I think you do. The crowd was impossible but the acts were top notch. The audience didn't make it easy for the 2nd guy, who could have been great but there was just no warmth from the audience.

So, really just wanted to let you know that Monkey Business is the best comedy club in the capital, we had a really good night, and that the crowd were pretty shocking !! We've tried so many comedy clubs, but your place is the one we keep coming back to and will do in the future. We've never been disappointed so keep up the great work.

You're a great compere and added a much needed spark to a dull crowd. You're very much appreciated.

 Dear Martin,
I attended the show last night in Chalk Farm and was really impressed with the acts. I've just been to one comedy show in Dubai and I was not amused.
I was the half Moroccan - half Sri Lankan girl from last night (which resulted in you attempting to wrangle something funny about the country. Sadly, neither country has much to offer on the comedy front other than our lovely camels, copious amount of ganja, and gay child hood prostitution).
If you could add me to your mailing list that would be fantastic!

Hi Martin,
I just wanted to say a few words of support really.
I have to say in the two gigs I've done for you now I've been very impressed with your commitment and support for new acts. I've been doing comedy (ok, trying to do comedy!) for about six months now and I've been impressed with the high standard of comics coming up the ranks. There's a lot of outstanding new talent - and none moreso have I noticed this than last night in Chalk Farm.
What strikes me about your Thursday night gigs is that you have such a strong and genuine conviction for giving new acts - whether established new acts like Nick Helm or new new acts like Gemma Whelan and myself - an outlet to practice the incredibly skillful art of comedy. Yes, there are other open mic nights and venues but I've never seen anyone who has quite the same vision as yourself about the importance of nurturing new talent. Hence the reason for this mail - to say thank you for the opportunity, and thank you for your new talent 'mission', because and assuring the future of comedy.
Just wanted to say that! I realise on my own part after 10 gigs I have so much left to learn and discover in terms of my own 'comedy voice' (the holy grail)! I'm almost returning to the drawing board with most ggs so I know what I've got to do before I'm anywhere near up to scratch - but with enough determination I hope to get there in the end.
So thank you again for the opportunity last night. You're a star.
Best wishes

Many thanks for a great night last night.  All my fellow companions agreed it was a fab night out and we will definitely make a point of coming back soon.
I'm sorry that you had a few people attempting to spoil the evening. Your efforts to minimise the audience conversation during the acts was really appreciated and DID make a difference!  In fact how you conducted your role as "MC" was highly admed by all my group and essentially it made the evening such a success.
Very best wishes for great 2008, and I look forward to another night out at Monkey Business very soon.

Martin -
thanks so much..  We had a fabulous evening.  I thought Reginald D.Hunter was remarkable - for my part worth the whole night to hear!  Sorry mate - didn;t go much for act 2 but then maybe I just missed what the material was! Good luck with the Comedy Club - always such a great hit on the head.  Am away for the winter now so no need to put me on your auto mailing list for the moment please (always rushed in internet cafes; best to avoid too much stuff in the in box) but I consider the Steeles my bar in London, so be assured  I will be back, and I will be at the club again.
So, my dear, my crew had a great night; my boyfriend had a beautiful party; he said all he saw were smiles.
Have a good Christmas
all the best

Hi Martin,
Just a few comments: first time at the pub and comedy club and overall an excellent evening. The pub itself is great, with its welcoming atmosphere enhanced by its most original decor. The food too was very good and reasonably priced although the drinks were a tad on the expensive side (£4.10 for a gin and tonic). As for the comedy itself, I felt this was also of a generally good standard. Having watched numerous comedy shows before - most recently at the Comedy Store in Leicester Square - I felt that last night line up was of a comparable standard. The notable exception however being the first act who was simply attrocious. It seemed like it was her first time and she looked completely out of her depth, with the vast majority of her jokes falling flatter than the proverbial pancake. The following 3 acts however were excellent so overall I would gladly recommend your establishment to my friends.

Hi Martin
I was at the comedy gig last night + wanted to give
you a punter's feedback whilst the gig was still fresh
in my mind.
I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Came along as I was intrigued by a short write up in
the listings of 1 of the free papers re. Ian Cognito
being barred from more venues than any other comic!
Great hook!!!
The Chalk Farm upstairs venue was a lot nicer + cosier
than the Kentish Town upstairs venue that I was
ferried from via taxi.
Why did I enjoy it?
The Two Magicians
= quirky, unususal, macabre in parts (still
v.enjoyable though!!!), loved their act, very funny
10 out of 10
The lady (alas I forget her name + I haven't got her
name in front of me), female stand up =  her set abt
sex + classical music took a little while to warm up +
get momentum but once she did = very good
just needs to develop the quiet confidence +
assurance(which would be so befitting her act,
classical background + demeanour) + more fluidity.
Good material once she got going (with lots of
potential for growth)
8 out of 10
Mitch Benn = fucking hilarious!!! Excellent songs,
loved his material
The act of the night
15 out of 10!!!
Again, I haven't got his name in front of me as he was
added to the line-up
The 4th act, the 20 yr old stand up = had some
excellent material, fluffed a bit of his set at
certain points but came back excellently =
Definitely massive potential
8 out of 10
Ian Cognito = largely very funny. Sometimes patchy
delivery.
8 out of 10
Overall, an excellent nite Martin
I look forward to more mirth + enjoyment in the future
I'd be very happy to go on yr mailing list
Kind regards + best wishes

Hi Martin, Alan & I really enjoyed our evening on Saturday.  We were comedy stand-up first-timers and it was a smashing introduction.  It was certainly varied and the standard was pretty high.  The young lad was a bit raw round the edges but you're probably right about him being pretty good in future - and what a brave kid!  The guy with all the props was very Tommy Cooperish and very funny.  The gay guy was a bit OTTP with the gay shtick - but funny too.  And, of course, Adam Bloom was the cherry on the cake.  Thanks for a great evening - we'll be back.Best wishes,  Dot (Norma's sister/Leo's auntie) Sent 24 April 2007

  • Great night last night and what a turn out! The acts were all good and Simon Munnery was excellent I must say.
My only problem is obviously that too many people were in the venue and you obviously know this so I don't need to keep on about that. Poor Sam. I guess that you were trying to please people and make them happy by letting them in.
Also I understand that Noel had an extended set, which was fabulous, it was just that I wasn't sure when he would end and so I thought I would have to walk out of the gig in order to get the last train home. I began worrying about the time rather than enjoying his jokes. That isn't your fault but perhaps you could start off earlier?
But overall it was a brilliant night out for my friend and I and we thouroughly enjoyed ourselves. It was lovely to meet you, you are such a friendly person! :).      Hi Martin Just a quick note to say how much we  enjoyed your show lat week Amanda Sent 13  June 2005

    Hi Martin!
Just thoughI'd'd drop you a quick word to say Thank You for one of the most brilliant nights out in a while. I came along to the show on Saturday, and not only did i get to see the AMAZING (and gorgeous) Noel Fielding, but also Simon Munnery, who i must say, i found extremely entertaining.
But back onto the highlight of my night; Noel Fielding. Absolutely genius. And in response to a couple of the people who've said it was too crowded, i disagree (although, admittedly i was sat comfortably at the front...).  It was a really friendly atmosphere and it was great of you to let in so many of the people that really wanted to see Noel (myself included!).

Dear Martin  ,I just wanted to drop you an email to say what a fabulous evening my friends and I had on Saturday night. An incredible line up and infact my husband said that he hadn't had so much fun in ages (not sure what that says about my company!) so we will definitely be back .  sent on   Mon, 20 Dec 2004 by Laura Bonneff
